2012 Tax Appeal

Your loyal support is at the heart of our life saving disoveries!

Thanks to you, our research groups have made major advances of international significance across all areas of cardiovascular research, with incredible promise to reduce suffering and death from heart disease – the single biggest killer of Australians.

Since heart disease and heart attack are so widespread, it’s only a matter of time before this epidemic touches us all. Millions of lives are hanging in the balance and The Heart Research Institute’s work is increasingly vital. So is your support.

Your gifts accomplish real results, as you can see in our latest Research Highlights. Below are just a few…

… one day modified sugars could keep heart problems at bay

… a world-first new synthetic blood vessel is set to revolutionise cardiovascular medicine.

Medical marvels don’t come cheap of course. Our researchers rely on expensive equipment that is specialised and in many cases, highly complex. In the two laboratories here at our state-of-the-art facility, the shine has worn off some devices as they are in constant use – but each one has a high price tag.

A single centrifuge that separates cell parts for analysis costs around $100,000. Maintenance alone is $45,000 a year.

Even providing one researcher with a set of pipettes – as basic to their endeavours as staplers are to an office worker – costs $225.

Only exhaustive searching over years can translate laboratory findings into real-life answers to such a devastating problem as heart disease – and this necessitates a considerable ongoing financial investment.

A gift to The Heart Research Institute will yield many times over for generations to come. Our researchers are at the cutting edge of their fields and continually receive prestigious prizes and awards worldwide. Still, scaling a medical Mt Everest is a team effort! That’s why we are so grateful for assistance from supporters like you, who faithfully help in our tireless work to detect, prevent and reverse heart disease.

It’s a simple equation. The more you give, the more we can achieve and the more lives we can help to save. With stakes sky high, we can’t afford disruptions or barriers. About 40% of all children under 15 have early signs of heart disease. An estimated quarter of Australians will be affected by 2050.
