Guy has been personally affected by heart disease and says that he will never forget the image of his formerly ‘invincible’ Dad being struck down by his heart condition. Undoubtedly this was a major catalyst for Guy becoming an athlete noted for being fitter than any other during his competitive years.
Guy Leech is best known as first Ironman legend.
Guy Leech shot to fame as a 19 year old with an extraordinary against the odds victory in the first ever professional ironman race in the world the Coolangatta Gold in 1984 in front of 120,000. Leech epitomised the bronzed Aussie with his sun bleached hair, outgoing personality, athletic talent and fighting spirit that saw him dominate Iron Man competition for the next 10 years.
"Leechy" won an amazing 7 Uncle Toby's Iron Man Championships and the World Iron Man title in the event many believe to be the ultimate test of fitness. He won the Australian Marathon swimming championships, represented his country in still water swimming and triumphed in his first attempt at the gruelling World Ocean Paddling championship in Molokai, Hawaii's over 56kms.
In 1994, the Australian Institute of Sport crowned Guy “Australia’s fittest Athlete” over elite athletes from our highest profile sports.
His titles include 1988 World Ironman Champion; World Kayak Champion; Australian Marathon Swimming Champion; three-time Coolangatta Gold Ironman champion; seven-time winner of the Uncle Toby’s Ironman series; First Celebrity Survivor Champion; ‘The Fittest Man in the World” – Inside Sport 1996; and most recently ‘The Fittest 40 year old on the Planet” – Ultra Fit magazine – November 2006. He has also represented Australia in surf life saving, marathon and stillwater swimming.
“I’ve come full circle since the days I used to compete,” Guy says. “Now I train other people. I still get to keep fit and do what I used to love with the Ironman sport but now I get paid to do it! I’m happiest when I’m on the water. But now instead of focusing on me going quick and improving, I have fun training other people and seeing them lose weight and get in shape.”
