At The Heart Research Institute, we have focused our work on understanding and overcoming atherosclerosis – the thickening and fatty build up of material in blood vessels.
As a major cause of heart and blood vessel disease, atherosclerosis contributes to heart attack, angina, stroke and several other diseases that together result in around half of all deaths in Australia. The disease can develop silently for many years without symptoms and it often takes a serious event like heart attack or stroke for a person to realise they are living with a killer.
