Biography
Professor Michael Davies has held three prestigious Australian Research Council fellowships (QE2, Senior, and Professorial). He served as Director of the Heart Research Institute from 2012 to 2014 and led the Sydney node of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Free Radical Chemistry and Biotechnology (2006–2013). In 2014, he joined the University of Copenhagen after being awarded a Novo Nordisk Laureate Research Grant, which was renewed in 2021 for an additional seven years.
Professor Davies has published 474 peer-reviewed journal articles, one book, eight edited volumes, 28 book chapters, and holds eight patents. His work has been cited more than 50,000 times, and he has awarded ‘Highly Cited Researcher’ status by the Web of Science.
Professor Davies' research interests lie in the mechanisms of protein modification by reactive species (radicals, two-electron oxidants, glycation reactions), the biological consequences of such reactions, and the development of methods to quantify protein changes and damage in cardiovascular pathologies. His current interests lie in the characterization of protein changes during the development of atherosclerosis (in both coronary and cerebrovascular arteries) by LC-MS proteomics, in peroxidase enzymes, modifications to the extracellular matrix of the artery wall, and the development of inhibitors of arterial wall damage.
