Inspiring students and fostering the next generation of scientists are what we do best. HRI is committed to providing an exciting and encouraging environment of research excellence and mentoring for postgraduate students to carry out their research and advance their scientific careers.

HRI students are provided with a wide range of practical, intellectual and emotional support from their supervisors, membership to and the associated benefits of an early-mid career research (EMCR) group, as well as the support and collegiality of the research family at HRI.

Our PhD students benefit from world-class research training, interaction with a diverse array of research groups across our own institute and that of our collaborative partners, and a variety of opportunities to learn more widely from some of Australia’s best medical researchers.

Higher Degree Research Scholarship Opportunities

HRI is currently seeking highly motivated, high-achieving, passionate New Zealand undergraduates to apply to undertake a Masters or PhD at HRI, with projects available in a our research groups.

Key Benefits:

  • Generous financial support of AUD$40,000, per annum (tax-free)
  • Return flights from New Zealand to Sydney (initial and return trip covered)
  • Accommodation support of up to AUD$600 p/week for the first two weeks in Sydney

Applications process

Scholarships are subject to project and supervisor availability.

Applications will be assessed by senior HRI Scientists based on academic merit and suitability.

Applications must include:

  • A one-page cover letter outlining your reasons for applying and your interests in research.
  • Your academic record (including certified academic transcript)
  • Your CV including referees (a summary of your work experience and other relevant activities)

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible, students must:

  • Meet the criteria to apply for HDR admission at the relevant University
  • Be an New Zealand citizen or permanent resident currently located in New Zealand
  • Be a New Zealand undergraduate in their final year of study or have completed within the last 12 months.
  • Commit to the HRI values and responsibilities
  • Attend an interview via Microsoft Teams
