The Heart Research Institute (HRI) recently had the pleasure of hosting three Year 10 students from Penrith Selective High School as part of their work experience program.

At HRI, we’re passionate about inspiring the next generation of researchers and health professionals. Over the course of a week, students Irene, Manha and Jennifer immersed themselves in the exciting world of cardiovascular research - gaining firsthand experience, learning new skills, and connecting with our passionate team of scientists.

The students had the rare opportunity to observe groundbreaking research in action, including laboratory procedures involving DNA, tissue and cell handling. They also explored the collaborative environment that underpins HRI’s mission to fight cardiovascular disease.

“Spending a week at HRI was eye-opening and truly inspiring,” said Manha. “This experience not only deepened my interest in science and health but gave me insight into the collaborative and driven environment of a world-class research institute.”

For Irene, highlights included using a micropipette, working with microscopes and analysing experimental outcomes.

“Everyone was incredibly welcoming and supportive. I felt encouraged to ask questions and get involved - plus, they even taught us how to use the coffee machine!”

Jennifer described the experience as both fun and unforgettable.

“We connected with professionals from each research group and learned about their goals and accomplishments. I’ve come away with new skills, memorable experiences, and a clearer sense of the impact I hope to have in my own future career.”

Not only were the students a delight to host, they also left some beautiful handmade thank you cards and drawings.

Thank you, Irene, Manha and Jennifer! We loved having you at HRI and hope to welcome you back one day as the next generation of medical research leaders.
