Dr Stephen Hollings is part of the fabric of the Heart Research Institute (HRI). As both Chairman and CEO, his contribution to HRI has been significant.

In recognition of Stephen's tireless commitment to supporting emerging researchers and their invaluable contribution to science, we are proud to launch The Stephen Hollings PhD Scholarship.

The Scholarship will support a meritorious student to undertake their doctoral studies at HRI, allowing HRI to continue to invest in and enable Australia’s brightest emerging cardiovascular researchers to realise their potential and contribute to our mission to cure cardiovascular disease.

Nurturing the next generation of research leaders

Cardiovascular disease is Australia’s – and the world’s – biggest killer.

The PhD scholars of today are essential in our fight against this devastating disease.

They will be responsible for the drug therapies, devices and screening diagnostics that will treat cardiovascular disease in the future. They will make the scientific breakthroughs that stop cardiovascular disease from killing millions around the globe.

But with research funding increasingly competitive and scarce, we risk losing a generation of talent to alternative careers.

PhD student Manisha Patil was awarded a scholarship to support her research in 2019.

“I am very grateful for the HRI scholarship. With it, I am financially stable, and I can finally focus on the one thing I love most: research.

I’m hoping my research can bring us closer to identifying a treatment for patients who suffer from cardiovascular disease.”

With your support, we can ensure scholars like Manisha will be at the forefront of our efforts to cure cardiovascular disease.

Shaping the future of cardiovascular disease research

You can help shape the future of cardiovascular disease research by contributing to The Stephen Hollings PhD Scholarship.

At a cost of $105,000 over three years, 100 per cent of gifts made to the fund will be directed to the Scholarship. HRI commits to raising any further funds required to award the Scholarship in 2023.

You may wish to provide a regular annual gift over three years, whether individually or in a giving circle in collaboration with family members and colleagues. Regular gifts will provide an emerging research leader with certainty and the opportunity to focus on vital research in a stable and supportive environment. One-off donations can also be made.
