Biography

Emeritus Professor Geoffrey Kellerman is 97 years young and a Distinguished Fellow at the Heart Research Institute (HRI).

Born in Sydney on 25th January 1928, Geoffrey attended Sydney High School where he was the School Dux, excelling in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, with first class honours in the last two subjects. Following his high school education, Geoffrey graduated top of medicine at the University of Sydney, in 1951.

Following postgraduate work in London and New York, he served as lecturer and later became an Associate Professor of Biochemistry at Sydney and Monash Universities. Geoffrey then became Foundation Professor of Medical Biochemistry in the new Faculty of Medicine at the University of Newcastle, being part of the new and experimental medical education movement that has led to so much innovation and progress in the international sphere. He went on to be named Emeritus Professor of Biochemical Science at the University of Newcastle.

After retiring from the University of Newcastle, Geoffrey spent 25 years working in the hospital clinical biochemistry service. He has influenced generations of medical students in understanding life and disease at the fundamental molecular level.

Geoffrey received an AO in 1990 for service to medical education, particularly in the field of biochemical research.

Geoffrey is a long-term supporter of the HRI and served on the HRI Board for over 10 years (1990-2002) and along with his distinguished career, also taught and mentored our very own Professor Matthew Vadas AO.
